Forza Motorsport 4: Week in Review 3/16/12

Rivals Mode is taking up my life and, from the looks of things, a good chunk of yours as well. While my family has been off visiting other family, I’ve been hunkered down at home with nothing but two dogs and a load of pizza boxes to keep me company. And my Xbox 360, of course. The result has been some prime quality time with my favorite game and yours (along with a little Mass Effect 3 here and there). This month features a crop of really fun Rivals Mode events, as well as some interesting challengers to drive against. I’m speaking, of course, of legendary driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who is the focus of this month’s Rivals Mode King of the Track event. Montoya is your target and we’ll give you stuff if you beat him on the track. And he's not above a little smack talk:

How cool is that?

Now, saying you'll beat JPM and actually doing it are two different things. In terms of on-track skill, Montoya outpaces Rampage Jackson by a good stretch (sorry Rampage, buddy. Don't hurt us. Please?) Of course, JPM brings to his Indianapolis Motor Speedway GP lap an innate sense of skill that one would expect from a pro race driver, as well as obvious Forza fandom, and a competitive streak as wide as the front stretch at Talladega. The result is a strong time in the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1—a 1:32.117 at the time of this writing—which puts him well inside the top 20 percent of all players. It probably shouldn’t be that surprising, considering what the guy does for a living, but it’s refreshing to see.

Elsewhere in Rivals Mode, this month also sees the start of our VIP Rivals Mode events, featuring the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 on the behemoth Nürburgring Nordschleife. While the car is an absolute joy to drive on this track there’s no room for error, as the slightest mistake is all that’s standing between you and a dirty lap (and another inevitable trip around the Ring to try again). Last week, we kicked off the Facebook polls to help us design the April VIP Event and, this week, we’re asking about the car class you want to play in April's VIP event. Head on over to our official Facebook page, look for the VIP Rivals Event Poll, and make your vote count!

Speaking of Rivals mode, those of you that beat Johniwanna in this week's Community Bounty event should have received your unicorns. We will be posting the winning favorite car stories with the debut of our new column, "Rear View Mirror", which John will be writing. Look for it on Monday.

But among all these events, one has captured my imagination more than any other: The Regatta. Our drag racing Rivals Event this month was specifically designed to include one car that holds a special place in my heart: the 1966 Ford Country Squire. This week, I spent a tremendous amount of time running the Squire as part of ID TimberWolf’s Community Bounty thread and, at one point, I was ONE PLACE ahead of him on the leaderboard, having set an identical time to his. The only difference? I set mine in the Country Squire, which clearly makes my time 1000 percent more legit (sorry Wolf...). Though Timberwolf has since passed me on the leaderboard, I’m proud of my devotion to Ford’s awe-inspiring, family-hauling, Magic-Door-Gate-sporting station wagon, and I encourage everyone out there to try out the Squire for themselves. No, you won’t be at the top of the Rivals Mode leaderboards, but you will be at the top of the style leaderboards… in my heart. Or something like that.

Anyway, I’m looking for new Country Squire tunes in the storefront to try and improve my time in the Regatta event. If you’re up for it, make me a drag tune and upload it to the Forza 4 Storefront with the description “SQUIRE MECHBERG”. If I try your tune and it improves my leaderboard position, I’ll send you a unicorn car. It’s that simple. So get to work, tuners, and let’s elevate the Country Squire to glory!

The Return of Turn 10 Track Days

This weekend marks the opening of the 2012 American Le Mans Series season with the running of the 60th Anniversary Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Saturday, March 17. The Turn 10 Community Team will be hanging out in on our official Facebook page (in the Turn 10 Track Day section) while we watch the race live via the ESPN app on Xbox LIVE. We want you to join us! Head to our official Facebook page and find the Turn 10 Track Day app (which will be live before the race begins), click on it, and you can join the chat. One other thing, to use the chat, you'll need a or account.

In addition to chatting about all the race action, we’ll be giving out prizes, including unicorn cars and DLC codes, and generally just enjoying the race. The green flag drops at 7:15 a.m. PDT and Turn 10 community folks will be popping in throughout the day, so join us for as much of the race as you can! See you on then!

Speaking of Sebring, we’ve got a few Turn 10 folks at the track this weekend checking out the race and they’ve been taking some photos while there. Here’s a selection of their best work so far:

The Pagani Huayra Story

You probably remember the Pagani Huayra as one of the stars of our January Jalopnik Pack for Forza 4. If you have driven the car, you know it is a truly special car. In the below documentary about the Huayra, you can see all of the passion and mastery that Pagani poured into it, resulting in a car that is a carefully balanced combination of cutting-edge science and beguiling automotive art. Check it out:

Title Update

I wanted to give you an update on the status of our upcoming title update for Forza Motorsport 4, which I know the Forza community has been expecting for some time now. As I mentioned last week, we ran into a glitch that prevented us from releasing the update on our original schedule. As a result, we are still in the process of finishing the title update. I understand the frustration over the update’s delay and I hope to be able to share more concrete news of its release soon. As you might have read on the forums or in the press this title update will touch a number of areas in Forza Motorsport 4, including addressing the slow garage and online lobby hangup issues, increasing the level cap in the game, and more, all with the goal of providing the best possible experience for Forza 4 players. As always, we'll provide a detailed breakdown of the title update upon its release. Until then, stay tuned, and continued thanks for your patience.

ForzaPlanet FRS Has Begun

Our friends over at ForzaPlanet have begun their own weekly race series, dubbed the Forza Race Series. The series begins on the Iberian International Circuit with the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo being the car of choice. You’ll need to qualify for this event before taking part. You can check out all the details for how to qualify, how to enter the event, and the event rules at the link above. Good luck!

See you next week!
