Forza Motorsport 4: Week in Review 3/09/12

Forza fans, get ready to race towards the horizon. Forza Horizon, that is. The latest chapter in the Forza franchise was unveiled to the press last week in San Francisco and officially announced this past Monday. Forza Horizon will be available this fall for the Xbox 360 (naturally) and is being developed by our friends at Playground Games in collaboration with Turn 10.

You might not know of Playground yet, but you probably are familiar with the games that this incredible group of developers have been involved with, which reads like an all-star list of recent racing game classics, including DiRT, GRID, Project Gotham Racing, and (one of my personal favorites) the TOCA Race Driver series. I spent a significant portion of my younger days deeply involved with all of these games so I’m overjoyed at the level of experience and talent Playground is bringing to Forza Horizon.

Now, I know that many of you are wondering just what Horizon is all about and, believe me, we’re itching to share all the coolness to come. Rest assured, all will be revealed in the coming months. In the meantime, be sure and head over to our Forza Horizon forum and join the discussion with the rest of the Forza community.

Here’s a quick recap of what the media had to say about Forza Horizon this week:

GameSpot: Why it’s not too early to get excited over Forza Horizon

Joystiq: Forza Horizon spun off by Playground Games

The Verge: Forza Horizon drifts onto Xbox 360 this fall

Porsche Expansion Pack

The announcement of a brand new Forza game is exciting stuff, but it wasn’t the only huge news to come out of Turn 10 this week. On Monday we announced the upcoming Porsche Expansion Pack for Forza Motorsport 4. That’s right, one of the world’s premier automotive brands is returning to the Forza Motorsport series in an expansion pack that will include 30 Porsche models to collect, drive, and customize, 20 new career mode events, new Rivals Mode fun, and more.

Turn 10 Creative Director Dan Greenawalt had this to say about the upcoming Porsche Expansion Pack for Forza 4: "The upcoming Porsche Expansion Pack for Forza Motorsport 4 is great news for racing fans and I’m pleased that we’ve been able to work closely with EA on an agreement that brings one of the world’s most iconic automotive brands to Forza 4."

News of the Porsche Expansion Pack also hit the press this week. Here’s a selection of some of the stories that featured our Porsche news:

Jalopnik: Forza Motorsport 4 Inks Deal For Porsche Expansion Pack

Destructoid: Porsche returns to Forza 4 in May as an expansion pack

Autoblog: Porsche Expansion Pack bringing 30 cars to Forza Motorsport 4 [w/video]

We are overjoyed about the return of Porsche to Forza and May 22nd (the day the expansion pack is due for release) can’t get here fast enough! In the coming weeks, we’ll be unveiling the list of cars that will be part of the expansion pack so be sure and stay tuned for more soon!

Juan Pablo, the King

Your King of the Track opponent for March is none other than international racing star Juan Pablo Montoya. A former F1 and CART winner as well as Indy 500 Champion, Juan Pablo is currently featured in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Circuit, driving the #42 Target Chevrolet Impala. For this month’s KOTT, JPM is holding true to his Chevy roots—having set a time in the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Grand Prix Circuit).

Juan Pablo had a great time driving this event and his competitive nature showed throughout, as he did his best to steadily improve his time. On the ZR1’s performance in the game, Juan Pablo said the Forza version “drives like the real car, with the real power. It was a handful to handle on the track!”

Now you can take that automotive handful out for yourself, challenge Juan Pablo’s Indy GP time, and compete for in-game prizes. The fun begins now so head to the Community Monthly channel of Forza 4’s Rivals Mode, find the "King of the Track" event and get to racing. Glory (and JPM) await!

Also a quick update on the Rampage Jackson gift car from last month's King of the Track event. We are still working to get the prize car and hope to have it wrapped and sent out next week.

Community Bounty: Johniwanna

This weeks Community Bounty is our new Community Writer John Schommer, (Gamertag: Johniwanna). If you beat his time in this week's Ready, Set, Gecko Community Monthly Rivals Event, you will win a sweet unicorn, the 2005 Honda NSX-R GT. We will also be giving away the unicorn of choice to the top three stories about your favorite car. So check out Johniwanna's forum post and share a tale about your favorite car. John thinks only a couple thousand players will beat his time. That's pretty lofty, so we also invite you to state how many people you think will beat his time.  This week's Community Bounty event ends Tuesday March 13, at 8 a.m. Pacific, so get your time in now!

Recording the 787B

In November of last year, the Turn 10 audio team traveled down to southern California for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the chance to capture an audio recording of the 1991 Mazda 787B, one of the most famous race cars of all time as well as the first (and only!) Japanese car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. But the 787B isn’t just one of the world’s most famous cars, it’s also one of the loudest cars ever made, with a rip roaring four-rotor scream that must be heard to be believed. Check out a behind-the-scenes look at how our audio team tamed the 787B for Forza 4:

You can check out the 787B for yourself as the car is part of the February American Le Mans Series Pack for Forza Motorsport 4, available for download now on Xbox LIVE!

Updated Title Update… Update

As I mentioned in the forums earlier this week, our latest title update for Forza Motorsport 4, which we were hoping to release this week, was delayed due to a last-second technical hang-up. We are working to address the issue but, as of now, I don’t have an ETA to share. Once I know more, I will be sure to update the above thread in the forums and we will naturally be releasing title update details on on the day it is released. Thanks for your continued patience here, folks, and please stay tuned for more.

April VIP Rivals Mode Poll

Hey Forza VIPs, are you enjoying the March VIP Rivals Mode event? If so, awesome! If not, well here’s your chance to let your voice be heard for next month’s version. That’s right, voting has begun on the April VIP Rivals event, which will be available in early April.

This week, we’re asking you to pick from three Japanese manufacturers—Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Nissan—for use in the event. Head over to our official Facebook page to get your vote in now. Next week, a new poll and a new chance to help guide April’s VIP Rivals event!

Photographing the Aventador in Forza and Beyond

We spotted this incredibly cool story on Autoblog this week: professional photographer Blair Bunting uses Forza Motorsport 4 and its incredibly sophisticated graphics and lighting engine to prepare for a real-life shoot featuring the Lamborghini Aventador. I could say more but, here, check it out for yourself:

So ends an incredibly exciting week in Forza Land. Have a great weekend everyone!
