Forza Motorsport 4: Week in Review 11/18

Brian Ekberg
Friday, November 18, 2011

It’s amazing to think that this week marks the ten-year anniversary of the original Xbox. It’s also a little scary. Ten years ago, I wasn’t working in the games industry, I wasn’t married, and I had lot more free time to enjoy games than I do these days. I vividly remember picking up my original Xbox from a local store and rushing home to my parents’ house where I was visiting at the time. I had two games in-hand—the original Halo and NFL Fever 2002 both of which consumed my life for a huge chunk of 2001. Two distinct memories:

1) Thinking Cortana was just as cool a character as Master Chief. Maybe even a little cooler.
2) Trying (and often failing) to deal with the white and black buttons on the original Xbox controllers when passing in NFL Fever.

Of course, in 2001, the first Forza Motorsport game was still approximately four years away, so it would be a while before I would find the game that would eat up more of my life than any before it. But nonetheless, I remember those early Xbox days vividly, as I’m sure many of you do as well.

Now, enough reminiscing about a decade past! Instead, let's reminisce about the week that was in Forza Motorsport 4 and take a look at what's coming up.

Update on Wheel Issues
As I’ve mentioned on the forums, we are aware of a number of issues with the 900-degree wheel and its interactions with Forza Motorsport 4. In the weeks since the launch of Forza 4, we have been investigating these various issues in preparation for our upcoming second title update for the game. This title update will address a number of different issues in Forza 4, including issues associated with 900-degree wheels. Look for more detail on this title update in the coming weeks.

Forza 4 Audio Spotlight
Forza 4 audio director Nick Wiswell was recently interviewed by Develop Online, discussing the development of the audio presentation in Forza Motorsport 4. In the article, Wiswell talks about the goals the audio team had for Forza Motorsport 4, as well as some of the tools and techniques used to bring the cars, engines, and tires to life in the game. Here’s a snip:

“The manifesto for audio was clear: to make the racing sound more exciting, improving the car audio to be more visceral,” explains Wiswell.

Four Ways to Play Video
Everyone’s got their favorite way to play Forza Motorsport 4. For some of us, it’s a controller and a couch. For others, it’s planted in a racing seat with a Fanatec CSR wheel in your hands. Whether you’ve got a controller, a wheel, or Kinect—Forza 4 gives you a way to play. Earlier this week, we posted up our page, a chance for you to check out all the best accessories to get the most out of your Forza 4 experience. For most of you folks, these accessories will be very familiar. However, if you’re looking for a holiday gift for a friend or loved one who also happens to be a Forza fan, you can’t go wrong here.

Hyundai Secret Car Design Contest
A reminder that our Hyundai Secret Car Design Contest continues for just one more week! We’ll stop accepting entries next Sunday, November 27, so make sure you get your entries in now! After all there's a great prize for this contest: a brand new 2012 Hyundai Veloster. You’ll be pitting your design chops against a league of talented Forza players so make sure you bring your A-game.

If you’ve got a design formulating in your head but haven’t yet put pen to paper (or, in this case, hand to controller), here’s the essential information you need to know:

• This contest is for Xbox LIVE Gold members living in the U.S. only.
• You must use the Hyundai Genesis Coupe for your design entry.
• You must use the official Hyundai logo. NO other manufacturer logos (apart from the official Forza/Turn 10 logos that appear in the vinyl editor) will be allowed.
• You must upload your car to the Forza 4 storefront and tag your entry “THR Secret Car”.

For a full look at the entry process as well as detailed official rules, check out the Design Contest announcement. If you’d like to share some of your entries with the community, you can post pics to this thread on our forums.

Photo Contest
Congratulations to this week’s winners of our ongoing weekly photography contests (you can see the winners here). The theme for next week’s contest is “November Speed.” Take your favorite car from the November Speed Pack DLC and send us your best photo! Winners will receive a unicorn car of choice and be featured in-game as a Turn 10 pick. For full details on how to enter, check out our photo contest details on the official Forza Motorsport Facebook page.

Next Game With Devs: Monday 11/21
We want to sneak in one more Forza 4 session with the community before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday so our next Game With Devs event is coming this Monday 11/21 from 2-4 p.m. PDT. If you’ve played in a Turn 10 Game With Devs event before, you know how this works: Head to our official Facebook page, navigate to the “Game with Dev” tabs and enter the chatroom and wait for Turn 10 folks to post and let you know where they’ll be. Find us and you have a chance to win a Forza 4 unicorn car. Each event features a host of different game types—multi-class racing, circuit, car soccer, tag, and more. See you then!

Finally, we’ll have an abbreviated version of the Week in Review next week because of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. Look for next week’s Week in Review on Wednesday (along with the photo contest winners). See you then!
