Forza Motorsport -- Week in Review 9/7/12

On the heels of last week’s flood of press about Forza Horizon, this week saw a great feature on the game by our friends at GT.TV. Regular readers of the Week in Review might remember us casually mentioning that we recently hosted press here at Turn 10. As it turns out, our guests were the Gametrailers crew and the fruit of that effort appeared last night on Spike TV in the States. During the feature, show host Geoff Keighley sat down with Turn 10’s Dan Greenawalt to discuss Forza Horizon in detail. Check out the full episode from last night here.

In the meantime, GT.TV hasn’t been the only one creating awesome Forza Horizon video. Today we released the first episode of our “Forza Horizon – Behind the Scenes” video series. Without further ado, check it out:

Over the next few weeks leading up to the release of Forza Horizon starting on Oct. 23, we will be lifting the curtain on the making of the biggest racing game of the year: Forza Horizon! In the inaugural episode, we introduce you to some of the creators of the game and talk about what makes Forza Horizon such an incredible new expression of the Forza series. You’ll learn about the world of Colorado, the unadulterated joy that is night racing, and lots of cool details to whet your appetite for the game.

We’d love to hear what you think about this first Behind the Scenes look at Forza Horizon. Discuss it in our dedicated thread on the forums.

Welcome Ian Webster
We’ve got a new face on the Forza community team as Ian Webster has joined the team as Forza’s European community manager. Ian lives in the UK and is a long-time racing fan who comes to us from Codemasters, where he spent the previous four years as community manager. Here’s more from Ian himself:

 "Hi everyone!

Before I tell you a bit about myself, I first of all just want to say that I’m honoured to now be a member of the Forza community team, and it’s great to finally get introduced to you all!

My name’s Ian ‘Helios’ Webster, I’m 32 years of age, and I currently live in the U.K. in a town called Rugby.

Gaming has always been a massive passion of mine, and it’s via my love of gaming and gaming communities that I was hired for my first job in the industry at Codemasters in 2008, and up until recently I worked there as Community Manager on a number of racing titles including DiRT 2 & 3, GRID, and the F1 series of games. Maybe my name’s familiar to some of you who’ve played those titles?

As you’d imagine racing games form a large part of my life, and when the opportunity presented itself to apply for a position with Turn 10 I knew it was something I had to go for. I’m a massive Forza fan with my first Forza title being Forza Motorsport 2, and the one thing that has always stood out for me (besides the sheer quality of the games themselves) is the creativity and passion of the Forza community, and it’s a community I’m very much looking forwards to working with. J

In preparation for joining the team I’ve been putting in my fair share of time on track in Forza Motorsport 4, and I look forwards to meeting as many of you as possible in-game both in Forza 4, and the upcoming Forza Horizon (which is looking amazing!). I do have a small fear though, which is that if I’m the target in any upcoming bounty hunts I might prove easy prey for some of you more experienced drivers at the moment. I’m determined to not let that happen though, and I’m sure a few of you will run across me online practicing hard on nailing those braking points and apexes!

Like I mentioned before I’m massively excited about being here, and if any of you want to get in touch then my official Forza forum account with the name of ‘HeliosT10’ should be and running soon. Alternatively, if any of you are social media lovers then you’ll find me on Twitter at @HeliosT10 (can we hotlink here?). In game, I’ll also be going by the Gamertag HeliosT10.

I’ll finish this intro off with a few small  facts about myself.

Fact #1 – I currently drive a Vauxhall Insignia, though sadly not the VXR model.

Fact #2 – I was awarded a black belt in Tang-Soo-Do (what Chuck Norris does!) at the age of 9.

Fact #3 – The car I’ve driven the most to date in Forza 4 is the Ferrari 458 Italia (It just agrees with me for some reason…).

Race hard!"

Now there’s only one way to well and truly welcome Ian to the Forza community team – and that is to kick his tail on the track! Come get your licks in at our next Game With Turn 10 community event, to be held on Tuesday, September 11 from noon to 2 p.m. Pacific. As always, we’ll be hanging out on our official Facebook page’s chat room and giving away gifts like unicorn cars and DLC codes (including codes for the recently released September Pennzoil Car Pack) when we are mixing it up with you in Forza Motorsport 4. See you then!

Road to Horizon Rivals Series
Did you know that we have a race to Colorado in Forza Motorsport 4? Well, okay, it will take some imagination on your part but picture this – a series of race events across the “world” of Forza Motorsport 4, held at some of Forza 4’s best North American race tracks. That’s the “Road to Horizon” Rivals event series that’s happening in the “Community Monthly” channel of Forza 4’s Rivals Mode. To take part, all you need is a copy of Forza Motorsport 4 and the Forza Horizon-themed Dodge Challenge 392, which you can acquire by pre-ordering your copy of Forza Horizon at participating retailers.

Forza Horizon Challenger Photo Series
If you’ve got a Forza Horizon pre-order Challenger, here’s one other cool thing we’ve got going on next week: a special photo challenge just for you! Take your best photo of your Horizon Challenger in Forza Motorsport 4. We’ll be giving out a random unicorn car to anyone who posts an original shot– check out the Community Events thread and look for "The Official Forza Motorsport Community Photo Contest Week 39" (which will open Tuesday evening) to submit your shot and look for more Challenger photo contests in the coming weeks.

Community Bounty -- VoodooUomo

This week, we're featuring another Turn 10 star as our Community Bounty -- the inimitable Christian (aka VoodooUomo). He's one of the top drivers not just at Turn 10, but in the entire Forza universe, period. As a result, the competition to beat him on the leaderboards is more challenging than ever. Appropriately, the stakes are higher too, as this week's Community Bounty has a doozy of a side bet. If Christian doesn't manage a Top 100 time in the "Voodoo that You Do" Rivals Mode event, he'll have to pose for a photo in his personal racing helmet... in a Smart car; a photograph that we will happily share with you all here in the Week in Review. Trust me when I say the community team wants this "win" bad and we hope you do too. At the time of this writing, Christian is just inside the Top 100 but there is still plenty of time to go before this bounty shuts down on Monday morning. I know Christian will be up his game before the weekend is done, so we'll need all you top racers to give your best as well. Let's immortalize Christian's racing skills in that most economical of economy cars!

Monthly Rivals -- Primo Drift

If you have been waiting to give drifting a try, now is the time to hit the track. This month we are featuring an opportunity to lay rubber with professional drift driver, Rob Primo. The last two editions of our car culture series Heavy Metal Affliction featured Primo's story and his car, a 2JZGTE powered Nissan S14. Read part one, which is full of pictures and his car specs and part two that features an interview and videos of him drifting. Then hit the Indianapolis Grand Prix track and see how you match up against a pro drift driver. There are tons of drift tunes and designs being offered by the community as well as Primo's comments and insight in the Primo Drift thread. Unicorns will be gifted randomly throughout the leaderboard for this event upon it's close. So you don't even have to beat Primo to earn a chance to collect a unicorn.

Made for Mech Winners

Here are the winners of our most recent two-week Made for Mech challenge:

  • jamin811
  • rom1guedin
  • AXB Maximus
  • BullesBikel
  • Watcher7479
  • CBRadio1985

Based on the minimal time I’ve had to jump in Forza Motorsport 4 and actually try out some of the awesome tunes you’ve been making for me, I’m putting Made for Mech on another temporary hiatus as we ramp up to the release date of Forza Horizon. Once things cool down a bit on the Horizon front, I’ll be able to devote some more time to put together some more tuning challenges. Watch this space for more!

Well, that about does it for this edition of the Week in Review. Next week, we’ll be showing off Forza Horizon for the assembled European press, so be on the lookout in the coming weeks for more awesome preview coverage of the game, including some as-yet-unannounced news in the near future. As always, keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter, and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday for our next Game With Turn 10 event! Until then, have a great weekend everyone!
