Forza Motorsport: Week in Review 6/22/12

Brian Ekberg
Thursday, June 28, 2012

We kick this week’s edition of the Week in Review with some Forza 4 news that was announced mere hours ago: the 2013 SRT Viper Bonus Pack is now available in Forza Motorsport 4 (go here to download on! That’s right, you can go download the American supercar and take it for a test drive months before the car will be available in the real world. The Viper Bonus Pack also includes a brand new Autovista experience for the 2013 SRT Viper GT. And better yet: it’s absolutely FREE. Once you’ve gotten your Viper, be sure and check out our brand new Viper-themed Rivals Mode event (which you can find in the Community Monthly section of Rivals Mode). In the coming weeks, we’ll be adding more Viper fun in Rivals Mode and bring you a Viper-themed online hopper to play as well. So get your Viper now and don’t miss out on all the action!

One tip after you've downloaded the pack: You can find the 2013 Viper under the "Viper" brand in the Car menu.

Forza Horizon Award Nominations

While the 2013 SRT Viper arrives in Forza 4 today, the car also has prominent placement in Forza Horizon. As you know, the Viper graces the cover of Forza Horizon and was the playable star of the game’s recent E3 demo in Los Angeles and at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans. Speaking of Horizon, the good news continues to pour in for the latest game in the Forza franchise. Just this week, Forza Horizon was nominated for more awards from E3 2012, including “Best Racing Game” from Gametrailers and being nominated as “Best Racing Game” by the Game Critic Awards, and we're honored to receive each recognition.

In case you missed it, both ESPN and TopGear chimed in with their respective first looks at Forza Horizon, and both are a worthwhile read.

Le Mans Weekend Recap

As John mentioned in Monday's edition of Rear View Mirror, last weekend's Le Mans events were great fun. It was incredible to see the black and white “Forza Motorsport” signage lining the race track (and all over the newly christened “Forza Motorsport Chicane”) and we had great turnout at our Forza Motorsport tent at the race—with race fans on hand to meet and greet drivers, participate in racing tournaments, and play both Forza Motorsport 4 and Forza Horizon. In short, it was a virtual racing fan’s dream inside one of the world’s greatest motorsports event.

And the action was just as hot in Forza Motorsport 4. Between our Saturday Game With Turn 10 event, and a 24-hour marathon chat with the community on our official Facebook page, it was great to soak in the Le Mans atmosphere with the Forza community.

I’d also like to take a moment to give a special shout out to all the Forza fans who completed our marathon 360-lap hopper in Forza 4:

Flying Mattress, Magnitro, G FASTgks, nurbenzin, Tim Wijen, OneAbusedBeaver, anazbananaz G, GUD 0L STONER, OTSEGO AMIGO, RoCkSuRsOx, links legends, supe89, JumboHue Jass, Saber Four Two, Reaper Six One, NegiBouzu Kun, a giantsaxplaya, aceracer195195, TheShaggyDude, LGS Joe Cool, BHL RamboSlice, KoG CAFILKA XS, BarilTarga911, Yamayagi, mckenna84, piranha59daniel, arturopo, Patthehorse, LE PHACOCHE, Xx yaYABUsa xX, Shibbi972, AzN L to the Y, manikou972, Trajik X, DIE Predator, detomaso L7C, KoLoRz03, JUDASchristo24o, KTR Lemonade, Ramires530, JI T 500, Sriracha Breath, CRABSinLARNYX, DezzieTee, KaiserVonPuter

Here’s what Forza community member GUD 0L STONER had to say about his 360-lap Le Mans experience:

“There was alot of parts where I went cross eyed and was about to give up but with support from mates online and the misses checking up on me I thought ah well its way to late to stop so kept going even at times just using one eye whilst other one sleeped taking turns. When I finally finished it was a proud moment as I havent ever done anything like this before. It was a welcomed challenge and Im pretty chuffed that I completed it.“

Last week, I was convinced that nobody would be able to complete this marathon-like feat in the game—unlike the real Le Mans, Forza drivers don’t necessarily have the luxury of swapping out with other drivers for briefer stints. Once again, however, the Forza community came up big and exceeded my expectations. So congrats to all our confirmed winners! Enjoy your unicorn cars and we’ll see you again for next year's race. (Also, just in case it’s not 100% clear, we are no longer accepting entries for this challenge).

Summer Stadium Starts Today!

Another bit of Forza 4 news kicking off today: The Summer Stadium for Xbox has officially begun! This 8-week calendar of events features the best sports entertainment and gaming, including a season-long tournament and weekly challenges to celebrate the extraordinary human feats and historic events happening this summer. Forza Motorsport 4 is proud to be part of this summer event and qualifying has officially begun. To take part, you need to be a resident in one of the participating European countries (see the official rules for full details) and you must set a qualifying time in the Summer Stadium Rivals Mode event (found in the “Community Monthly” channel of Rivals Mode. This opening round will be available until July 5, so get your time in now to qualify for the rest of the tournament!

Forza 4 On Sale at Microsoft Store

If you’ve been holding off on purchasing your copy of Forza Motorsport 4 so far—no, we won’t judge you—then perhaps this will change your mind: The Microsoft Store is now selling Forza 4 at a greatly reduced price. Now you can get 2011’s biggest and best driving game for just $29.99. So, fence-sitters, consider this a gentle nudge off the pickets—come join us in Forza 4 land! It’s a nice place to visit and an even better place to hang out.

Jalopnik’s Driving Lessons

Car blog Jalopnik has started a new series called “How To Drive Fast”, a regular column about, well, driving quickly, and written by IndyCar race driver Alex Lloyd. While the series' first column was an introduction, this week’s edition features the first substantive look at what it takes to make it happen on the track. Dubbed “How to Carve the Perfect Curve”, the column explains some essential racing techniques, as well as terminology like “apex”, “turn-in” and more. For many of you Forza Faithful, this column will be stuff you already intimately know (or at least know intrinsically). For others, it’s a worthy read to introduce you to some of the techniques that apply not just to the real world but to the Forza series as well.

Here’s a fun video of a Lamborghini Gallardo in the snow as part of a shoot for Lamborghini Magazine.

VIP Cars

Forza Motorsport 4 VIPs, check your in-game messages today, as we've got a brand new VIP coming your way. Forza community painter H3rTz DoNuT created a gorgeous custom livery using the famous Forza fictional track Maple Valley as his theme. The livery is featured on the 1998 Cerbera Speed 12 with a custom tune from community member Jureidini. In other words: This is a hot one. And for those of you non-VIPs, you know you can get in on the fun too, right?

Next Week: July DLC
Before we head out for the weekend, a heads up: As usual, we’ll be announcing our next DLC pack on Tuesday, June 26. In the meantime, hit the forums for our official “Guess the Car List” thread—where we’ll be posting clues about next month’s cars. Get your guesses in now and, as always, have a great weekend everyone!
