Forza Motorsport: Week In Review 10/5/12

John Schommer
Friday, October 5, 2012

Happy Friday, Forza Faithful! As you may have noticed, the world is abuzz over Forza Horizon. Car announcements, in-depth interviews giving out many new details, and of course the recent release of the official launch trailer. If you watched the trailer—and I’m sure you did—you also saw the release date of the demo. Yup, it’s coming on Tuesday, Oct. 9!

This week’s edition of the Week in Review is brought to you by Johniwanna. With my beloved news columns Rear View Mirror, Heavy Metal Affliction and Forza Garage on temporary hiatus thanks to publishing problems, I have been starving to share my thoughts with the community. Do not fear, these popular article series will return (along with the first edition of “Forza Horizon: Under the Hood”) as soon as technology allows.

Now on with the details of said Forza Horizon frenzy and… on with the Week In Review!

The Demo is Coming! The Demo is Coming!

If you were lucky enough to attend E3, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Britcar 24 Race, or, most recently, the Eurogamer Expo, you may have already had a chance get a taste of Forza Horizon. If not, the demo is coming in just a few short days!  The fully immersive experience will let you throw up dust in festival events on the gravel roads of the upper hills, engage in a street race that takes you over the gorgeous Finley dam, and will let you test out several different cars along the way.

Several of the events in the demo will turn into Rivals Mode events, allowing Forza lovers to compete against one another to set the fastest lap time. To further whet your appetite, a chunk of the overall game map will be open to explore however you see fit.

Now, if early access to the open roads of Colorado wasn’t enough, we are also giving out a custom liveried 2013 SRT Viper GTS to those who download and play the Forza Horizon demo and then purchase and play the game. This is the only way to get this rare liveried version of the SRT Viper GTS.

Access to the Forza Horizon demo requires an Xbox LIVE account. The Forza Horizon demo will be available exclusively to Xbox LIVE Gold members during the first week of release and, to receive the free Viper, Xbox LIVE Gold member access is required.

Are You Ready To Go?

The Forza Horizon launch trailer is a must-see. If you haven’t seen it now is your chance. If you have now is your chance to find some new detail you never noticed. Was that a golf course I saw that Viper flying into?

Ian @ Eurogamer Expo

Last week, Forza’s UK Community Manager Ian Webster attended the EuroGamer Expo in London and gave us this first-hand account of the show:

"Last week Earls Court in London played host to the Eurogamer Expo 2012, bringing with it an opportunity for gamers to get hands-on many of the most exciting up and coming titles, including of course our very own Forza Horizon!

"I was lucky enough to be able to attend the event for two days, representing Forza Horizon at our booth and interacting with the awesome Forza fans who made the pilgrimage to London to see it. The game was a hit with the numerous Forza fans I had a chance to speak with.

"As well as giving racing fans a chance to get hands-on with the game, we were also honored to be asked to present Forza Horizon at one of the Eurogamer Expo’s coveted developer sessions. Ralph Fulton from Playground Games did a stellar job, putting on a great show for the crowds. He showed off some never seen before gameplay footage, and answered plenty of questions from the fans in attendance.

"The full Forza Horizon developer session was streamed live by Eurogamer. If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet you can check it out below. It’s well worth a view, there is plenty of new content you might not have seen before, along with an amazing piece of footage that shows off the day-night transition present in the game in all its glory!

"Also exhibiting at the full four-day event were our good friends from TORA, who were giving racing gamers a chance to get their Forza Motorsport 4 fix at the event by way of a “Gamer in a Reasonably Priced Car” challenge. The challenge was keenly contested with nearly 200 people taking part, and over the course of the four days of the Expo the fastest time was set by Richard Millard—Gamertag Richy89-- who’s also suspiciously (just kidding) the TORA community manager.

"As I always do at events such as this, I had a great time. It was an absolute pleasure getting to meet in person, some of the people that I’ve spoken to during my first month as the EMEA Community Manager for Turn 10. Our thanks go out to all of you who visited our stand and tried out Forza Horizon, we hope it really whet your appetite for next week’s demo!

See you at the next Eurogamer Expo — Ian”

Facebook Horizon Car Reveals Continue

The rides that will soon be at your fingertips in Forza Horizon are being revealed on the official Forza Motorsport Facebook page. Every day we are posting 3-4 cars from the game and, each Wednesday, you will find a number of new-to-the-Forza-series cars.

One of my favorites is the 2011 Citroën DS3 Racing. This car has got lines you just don’t see often in the U.S. and has personal touches from the great Sebastian Loeb. The DS3 turns heads and is grippy and quick. What are your favorites so far? Tell us in the Week in Review thread.

Snowowl Celebrates 25th Anniversary—Forza Style!

Ever wonder how the storefronts are policed? Who enforces the standards and expectations of storefront use? Snowowland his team of crack investigators do! It’s one of those thankless jobs that must be done and this man does it with skill and tact.

Recently, Snowowl and his wife got a chance to take part in a real life Forza experience – or something pretty close to it. Here is a Snowowl’s summary of what sounds like a very fun weekend:

"We are celebrating out 25th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas.  We both did a ride-along in a Porsche Cayman at Exotics Racing in Las Vegas, on their 1.4-mile road circuit, adjacent to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, then I drove six laps on the course (even passed a Lamborghini Gallardo at one point) in a 400 HP Porsche 991 Carrera S. Each car is equipped with paddle shifters, very much like the Fanatec wheels, and I certainly felt at home. In most cases, a professional race driver is the co-driver for assistance and personal instruction.

"Exotics Racing currently has about 40 cars available from the new McLaren MP4-12C, the Nissan GT-R Black Edition and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S, and promise with enough requests, their company will buy any car for their stable which is under $1 million in price.  Specifically, they mentioned the Bugatti Veyron is often requested, but it is more than double the price they're willing to pay. :( The stock on hand I saw included the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Porsche 997 Turbo S and a thumpin' Audi R8 V10."

Congratulations, Snowowl, on your 25th anniversary and congratulations finding a woman that shares your passion for cars!

Ken Kurtz’s "Heart of a Champion"

This month Heavy Metal Affliction brings you an opportunity to race against another real-world race driver in the Rivals Mode event “Heart of a Champion” (which you can find in the Community Monthly channel of Rivals Mode). Race against three-time USTCC Champion Ken Kurtz at his favorite race track: Infineon Long, now known as Sonoma. Ken is very competitive—which comes in handy for a three-time champion—and in Forza Motorsport 4 his driving skills transfer well. As of this writing he is number 21 of some 5,500 players.

Since Ken knows he will be hard to beat he is providing chances to play against him in person, running trivia contests, and really enjoying himself.

Check out the main thread to learn about the livery contest, tune contest, and when Ken will be hosting "Race with Ken" events. I promise to show up for a couple of them as well. While beating me won’t be much of a challenge you never know what the "Unicorn Saint" will bust out of his bag of goodies.

Not that I need to remind you, but don’t miss the Forza Horizon demo coming on Tuesday; we’ll also be releasing the third part in our “Forza Horizon – Behind the Scenes” video series on that day. Have a great weekend!
