Rear View Mirror 9/17/12

There is so much racing out there, no one can keep up with all of it. Rear View Mirror takes a look back on the weekend in real world racing and what is going on in the world of Forza so you can keep up with the latest, even if you can’t watch it all.

MAVTV 500 IndyCar World Championships at Auto Club Speedway

For Ryan Hunter-Reay to win he had to beat Will Power by enough positions to gain 13 points. After tussling with Hunter-Reay, Power spun out and tagged the wall early on. Hunter-Reay needed to maintain a fifth place win to edge out Power for the championship. There was still a long race ahead.

Power’s team somehow managed to rebuild his car and put on 12 more laps, which kept the pressure on Hunter-Reay, who managed third after Takuma Sato crashed in the final laps.

Ed Carpenter was confident about his car and his ability at the last race, an oval. That confidence played out to a well-deserved win which was hard fought against Scott Dixon, who settled for second. There were many lead changes in the race but Carpenter in the Fuzzy’s race car was fast throughout and had the set up that worked best.

So ends the 2012 Izod IndyCar season. Ryan Hunter-Reay is the first American since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006 to win the overall championship.

Check out this video of Power’s spin that nearly collected Hunter-Reay:

American Le Mans Series Virginia International Raceway

At the first ALMS race to be held at VIR ever, the race excitement started off with a turn one pile up. Key race cars were able to avoid significant damage and, after this melee, the race was free of any more major events. There was plenty of contact though and several full-course cautions.

In GT, Corvette Racing #4 clinched the driver’s, team, and manufacturer championships. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner won their fourth victory in the nine races thus far. They took the win over the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche by 19.5 seconds. The #01 Tequila Patron Ferrari 458 took third after starting at pole. The 01 Ferrari also took the Michelin Green X Challenge award for being clean fast and efficient.

In P1 Muscle Milk avoided the gearbox trouble of the last couple weeks and stood atop the podium. The Muscle Milk team was followed by the Dyson Mazda’s: the #16 earned second and the #20 took third. Muscle Milk need only complete 70 percent of the upcoming Petit Le Mans to secure the championship.

Check out the ALMS news page for full coverage.

Aussie V8 Supercars Dick Smith Sandown 500

In a 500-kilometer race preceded by standard qualifying and two qualifying races, Craig Lowndes won the Dick Smith Sandown 500. This would be Lowndes’s fifth win at Sandown and his co-driver Warren Luff’s debut win.

Championship point’s leader Jamie Whincup settled for third after being forced out wide and into the dirt in lap 159. Paul Dumbrell charged all the way from 19th to finish second.

 Geico 400 at Chicagoland

Wild card Jeff Gordon hit a wall, top contender Denny Hamlin ran out of gas, and crowd favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. breathed a sigh of relief when the first race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup was over.

Jimmie Johnson lead the first 172 laps of the race and sent a strong message of dominance to the other drivers.  Brad Keselowski and his #2 Dodge were not hearing any of that and beat Johnson out of the pits with 35 laps left and never looked back. Kasey Kahne, the other wildcard who made the Chase, ended in third. It is now officially “on”.

DTM Oschersleben

Canadian BMW driver Bruno Spengler won the eighth DTM race of the season.  Gary Paffett earned second in his Mercedes-Benz and Jamie Green (MB) followed in third. The last two races of the season will determine if BMW or Mercedes will be at the top.

More than 71,000 spectators watched the weekend’s races in Magdeburg. The ninth race will take place on Sept. 30 in Valencia. Audi is mathematically not capable of winning but Mattias Ekstrom of Audi holds the lap record and the last two years wins. This should make it very competitive nonetheless.

Sir Stirling Moss Turns 82 today

Hats off and glasses up to toast one of the most legendary drivers since rubber ever met the road. Sir Stirling Moss celebrated his 82nd birthday today. His racing accomplishments are so vast I cannot even begin to list them, but in his own words, winning the Mille Miglia in the Mercedes 300 SLR, was his greatest accomplishment.

Enjoy this classic footage to commemorate the birthday of one of racing’s greatest greats.

Forza Singles League Drift Competition

Hosted by LBK Kaptsaveaho this drift competition was comprised of 129 battles throughout the month-long season and finished with a playoff of the “Great 7.”

Here is a link to the thread that contains the rules and posts from competitors. In the end Divitts battled with Spitsy for the title of FSL Champion. Divitts won. The third place tie was between LightningHiro and Boston; the fifth place tie was split between Bennie, Ginger and Mistified. Congratulations to the “Great 7,” and all who competed.

Here is taste of what these guys are throwing down.

Dream Job Acquired

We often get the question, “How do I get a job at Turn 10?” The truth is, we hire people from a broad variety of experience and expertise and all of us share a love for Forza and for car culture in general. Of course, it takes more than passion to get a job with one of the top development studios in the world (if we do say so ourselves) but passion is a crucial ingredient that we always look for.

Forza community member David Nichol, Gamertag Chippy569, has a history of being captivated by car audio and using his education to exploit its intrciacies. He also has great taste and a passion for cars. I know because I featured him and his Mercedes 190E-16V in an edition of Heavy Metal Affliction back in July.

Through his own expression of his talents during the time he spent with our Creative Director Nick Wiswell, he has landed a job on our audio team. It’s an amazing sequence of events that have lead to this opportunity. I expect he will be capitalizing on every moment. Welcome to the team Chippy!

Here is a link to the Track Time Audio site where Nichol talks about his trip to Washington it includes a time lapse video of the trip and some fun facts. Check out the rest of the site to see why he was an obvious choice.

The MSA TORA Britcar 24 Hours of Silverstone has come to a close, and the official final results have been released.

F4H Black Sheep Racing took the outright win with a total of 672 laps around the Silverstone Bridge Circuit. There was a close battle for second with M&M Racing just edging out a lap on Flawed Fish Motorsport right at the end, and HR Turner Motorsports was only a third-of-a-lap behind them.

The Hailfire Turner Motorsport #9 car took victory over their closest rivals Forza Racing Hungary - who made their TORA debut at Silverstone. Aston Martin Racing wasn't too far behind after a wreck early in the race put a stop to their charge.

The CQR cars of CQR Ignominy and CQRish took one and two over the Team CRA Red Bull Sierra. They finished with only two laps between themselves, which is extremely impressive considering the cars they were driving.

Join TORA for the final TEC race of the year on December 8 as they compete in the MSA TORA 8 Hours of the Nurburgring.

You can watch the entire race replay here. For information about upcoming TORA events click here.

The real life Britcar 24 Hours of Silverstone is next weekend, and TORA will join Rogue Motorsport in the garages showing off the Forza franchise to the general public. They will be offering race fans a chance to play the first UK public demo of Forza Horizon.

If you are looking to experience organized online racing, Virtual Motorsports holds events that cater to all classes of driver.

VM NASCAR Series 2

The first race of the season was a 50-lapper at Sunset Speedway. In what would be the easiest race of the series, drivers tried to keep their Ford Fusion or Chevy Monte Carlo race cars out of the wall while keeping the throttle wide open. #25 inviseco took first in the top qualifying room.  Full race results here.

VM GP2 Series 3

Racers driving Mazda MX-5 Superlights at Silverstone this week saw a nine-lap sprint race followed by a twelve-lap feature race. In the sprint race #83 VVV Nonni D took first, followed by #955 FMS Takumi and #440 VVV Amarth filled out the podium. In the feature race Amarth and Nonni D swapped podium spots and Takumi maintained his second place position. Full race results here.

VM Super GT Series 3

This race series starts in one week in the style of the Super GT Series of Japan, but with a twist. You pick your favorite car with a pre-made race replica livery that determines your team placement.

And here is their latest promotional video for the upcoming Stock Hatch Series 3:

That’s it for this week folks.
