Flashy Designs Create a Brand New Style for Livery Artist David "Duff Man D" Wylie

By: Landin Williams, Community Lead

Hello and welcome to the second edition of the Forzamotorsport.net Community Spotlight, the weekly article that showcases some of the coolest looking cars, while taking a look behind the scenes at the people who create them. If you are new to the world of Forza 2, then you may not be aware of the artistic portion of our community, who spend hours upon hours creating incredibly intricate designs with simple layers and shapes. With the help of Forza 2’s detailed livery editor cars are transformed into a canvas, where gamers show off their creativity in the form of automotive art.

This week, we turn the spotlight on Replica Livery artist David “Duff Man D” Wylie, and Fantasy Livery artist, Steven “system addict” Allan, who have both recently created incredible designs. Of course there is an endless supply of amazing artwork to be found on our forums, but for now check out these incredible works of art!

David Wylie (aka Duff Man D on our forums) has been a very active member of the Forza community since Forza Motorsport 1, and when he is not dreaming about purchasing a DC5 Integra Type R, or upgrading his 1998 Peugeot 206, he is most likely creating livery designs on Forza 2. As a youngster, Wylie recalls booting up his old school Amiga game console and running stints with his 3 brothers on Geoff Crammonds GP, the game that triggered his love for motorsports.

Since then Wylie has been very involved with not only video games, but cars as well. Currently he owns a slightly upgraded Peugeot 206 with custom wheels, lowering springs and an air induction kit, however it is his future plans that really had me intrigued. “Ever since I first laid eyes on the DC5 Integra Type R in Championship White there was no contest...I had to have one” he says. Although Wylie has yet to make the leap into the clean coupe, he already has a plan of attack for possible upgrades. He is very intent on making his future Type-R one of the cleanest around, especially considering his ultimate aim is to get it featured in his favorite automotive editorial; Banzai Magazine. Of course this dream may take years to accomplish, but in the meantime Wylie can live out his dreams in Forza 2, otherwise known as his “Motorsport Heaven”.

Ever since his days playing Forza 1, Wylie has been enthusiastic about the livery editor, and when he got a hold of Forza 2 on the day it was released in the UK, he put down Forza 1 and continued creating custom cars and race replicas alike. “It took a couple of weeks to come to grips with the brand new livery editor but once I did it was hard to put down for those first couple of months” says Wylie. Of course since those first few months of uncertainty, Wylie has gone on to produce a huge number of quality replicas, and custom original designs that really stand out from the crowd.

In fact over the past few months I have seen a very distinct style emerging from all of his creations, a style that is very flashy, yet clean and sophisticated. It only takes one look to pick out a race design by Wylie, and with his newfound attachment to the tuning community, you can expect that most of these cars will zip around the track at a speedy pace.

"The way the painters, tuners, testers & sellers interact on here is amazing sometimes. No other game I know has such a diverse community with so many different things happening at any one time. It never stops & that's why Forza 2 will always be my No.1 game. Nothing touches it in terms of just immersing you in the experience". -- David "Duff Man D" Wylie

The best example of this Forza synergy in motion is Wylie’s submission to our First Anniversary Livery Contest, a car that was eventually tuned by the folks over at AZT, and offered to the community as a free gift. Through the use of his very unique and classy visual style, Wylie created this one of a kind Mitsubishi Evolution 8. Here is what he had to say about his winning design:

“The Anniversary design was actually a car I created on the original Forza Motorsport, and when I saw the competition advertised this design seemed like an ideal choice. All in all I must have spent around 8 hours in total replicating the design & customizing the main Forza logo. It’s not the most complex design I’ve done but I think the colors give the car a very clean & uncluttered look.

“I created the main Forza 2 logo from scratch along with the First Anniversary lettering, and eventually decided to include the chrome effect (his signature style) on the side decals. I used a carbon fiber effect over a metallic silver undercoat as the background, and then added a few white and black transparent layers over the top. In the end it came out much better than I thought it would. Apart from that it's a pretty simple design; the red and orange outline around the carbon fiber was all about matching up the chosen shapes to keep the design flowing with the curves of the body. Throw in some Ralliart decals, and a gold Turn10 logo, and that's all that was needed. I usually like doing detail heavy stuff but at this point I felt that no more work was necessary. Any more would have spoiled it.”

Thanks to David Wylie aka “Duff Man D” for taking to time to talk to us about this great design! If you would like to get ahold of your very own copy, then make sure to check out the First Anniversary Car giveaway thread here. Additionally you can check out more of Wylie’s work in his personal winner’s gallery here. Of course he also has many new projects on the horizon, so you can look forward to seeing more of Wylie’s unique style in the future.
