Forza Motorsport-Week in Review 10-12-12
Two milestones occurred to me this week. First, we officially crossed the one-year anniversary of the release of Forza Motorsport 4 on Thursday. And as of Tuesday, Oct. 9 we were two weeks away from the official US launch of the next great Forza game – Forza Horizon! In fact, today marks another milestone for Forza – the review embargo has lifted and the world is getting to see what the international press has to say about Horizon. While we haven’t seen all of the reviews that will undoubtedly be revealed in the coming days, some of the biggest enthusiast sites in the world have chimed in with their opinions on this year’s hottest racing game. Here’s a selection of quotes (click to read the individual reviews):
For many of you, this week also was your first chance to get ahold of Forza Horizon for yourselves, thanks to Tuesday's release of the official Xbox LIVE demo of the game. If you haven’t yet found the time to get your hands on the demo, go download it now! It’s available this week exclusively to Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers, and will be available to all starting on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
The demo gives you a huge chunk of Colorado to explore, lots of events to try, a smattering of awesome Horizon vehicles to drive, and a good deal of replay-ability thanks to some clever Rivals event functionality built into the game. The coolest part? The demo is just a sliver of all the awesome content awaiting you when the full game launches in less than two weeks!
Don’t forget we are giving away a 2013 SRT Viper GT-S with a unique livery to those who play the demo, then purchase Forza Horizon and play online. And, while I doubt I need to tell you Forza Faithful this, for those who purchase and play the game within the first week of release will receive a free Saleen S5S Raptor, a Horizon unicorn car available only from the Forza community team.
Horizon on X-Play
If you missed the live appearance of Forza Horizon (and Turn 10’s own Dan Greenawalt) on a recent episode of G4’s X-Play here’s your chance to see the segment:
Under the Hood of Horizon
"Under the Hood" has returned! Long-time readers remember Under the Hood from last year’s launch of Forza Motorsport 4 and, earlier this week, we posted a Forza Horizon edition of UTH, featuring a discussion with Dan Greenawalt and Playground Games’ creative director Ralph Fulton. This installment covered a wide variety of topics, including night racing, tuning, and more. Give it a read and look for another edition in the series coming soon!
You’ve heard from the critics, you’ve heard from the developers, now you can see what some of your fellow Forza Faithful are doing in Forza Horizon! Check out this thread on the forums to see some of the awesome creations coming from our select group of community folks who have been busy in the game ahead of its release. There’s already a ton of awesome content in there for you to browse, with much more to come!
Forza at The LeMay
Earlier in the week, Turn 10 celebrated the upcoming launch of Forza Horizon with a field trip to a local car museum. Our own Alex Kierstein was on hand at the event. Here’s his account from the event:
"The LeMay Museum is a new car museum near Seattle stuffed to the brim with cars, all of them unusual, interesting, or unique. Turn 10 Studios is stuffed to the brim with talented developers, all of them car nuts. So you can see why it was easy for the studio leads to choose the LeMay as the perfect place to take some time to celebrate the upcoming launch of Forza Horizon, and to thank all of the people who worked hard to bring action racing to life, Forza style.
"After some refreshments in the team space, we piled into some decidedly un-sporty (but very comfortable) buses for the short trip south to the LeMay. Once there, we girded ourselves for the onslaught of automotive excellence by taking one (or several) turns through the buffet line. A few short speeches and group shouts of “FORZA!!!” woke up everyone who was already in the museum, and then we were unleashed on the LeMay.
"It was really the perfect opportunity for the true car nerds among us to geek out over some truly unusual machinery – a Smokey Yunick “sidecar” Indy racer, anyone? – but everyone else simply had a great time. A particular favorite was the LeMay’s excellent slot car track. You might be surprised to find out that Forza driving skill doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to keep a slot car on the track! Some of our more lead-footed (lead-fingered?) folks kept the LeMay pit crew busy returning flying cars to their slots."
What is Chasing?
Forza Horizon fans should keep an eye out for an upcoming Web reality series, "Chasing." Starring three teams of music-lovers and acclaimed DJ Steve Aoki, "Chasing" will pit the teams against each other in a reality competition like no other. I don’t want to give it away but Forza Horizon figures prominently in the series. The fun kicks off on Oct. 23 on Fuse and, for now, you can check out the official "Chasing" Facebook page for more information.
Austin City Limits
If you’re at Austin City Limits this weekend, chances are you’ll run into something to do with Forza Horizon. In addition to having Horizon-liveried supercars rolling around town for photo ops, we’ve also got a Forza Horizon music lounge happening at the American Legion Hall, Travis Post 76. On Friday evening the lounge will host performances by Geographer & Vacationer and live DJ sets by the Wombats and the Black Lips. And finally on Saturday look for the MAXIM Party which will include performances by Bombay Bicycle Club and Dev, as well as DJ performances by Caveman and Chill Akilas. Look for celebrity appearances too, and of course, Horizon demo stations available to check out the game.
Road Atlanta Challenge
Our Road Atlanta Challenge Rivals contest wraps up today but, if you didn’t get a chance to race for a chance to win awesome Xbox and ALMS prizes, have no fear, you’ve still got time. Over at the American Le Mans Series Web site, you can still enter for free for your chance to win. The winners will be announced during next weekend’s season-ending Petit Le Mans Series race weekend (and of course, we’ll post winners as well). Which brings us to…
Petit Le Mans Track Day
Yes, that’s right; it’s our final Turn 10 Track Day event for the 2012 ALMS season. Join us on Saturday, Oct. 21 to watch the livestream of the Petit Le Mans Race on Xbox LIVE (via the ESPN app), on ESPN3, or on the ALMS Web site. As always, we’ll be chatting with race fans on our official Facebook page during the 10-hour race, as well as giving out unicorn cars, DLC codes, and more. It’s the last Track Day of the year, so don’t miss it!
Rivals Runner Update
Have you been trying out the Rivals Runner action in Forza Motorsport 4? This monthly all-up challenge looks to crown a new Forza 4 Rivals champion each month, across four different event disciplines – hot lap, drag, drift, and autocross. If you want to get involved, check out the “Community Monthly” channel of Rivals mode and look for the “Rivals Runner” text in the description. Set your best time or score in each event and you may score enough points to be a winner. If you want to see where you stand, check out the Rivals Runner leaderboard thread in the forums, where Fred will be posting updated leaderboards for the top 1,000 finishers. Good luck to everyone!
SRT Family Ties
Earlier this week, SRT released this outstanding video showing the link between SRT’s active race team and their awesome track-ready production models. It’s a great piece—and, no I’m not just saying that because it features the 2013 Viper #91 SRT Motorsport GTS-R (aka the Forza Motorsport 4 car). Dig it:
Heavy Metal Returns
Finally, I’d like to welcome back Heavy Metal Affliction. After a few weeks’ absence, John’s column devoted to Forza fans’ favorite rides is back on our official Facebook page. This week, John’s putting the spotlight on a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am owned by race driver and Forza Faithful Ken Kurtz (Gamertag FMS Peakskir). Check it out!
Well, how’s that for a week in the Forza world? Next week, we’ve got more cool stuff for you, including more car announcements on Facebook and Twitter, more Forza Horizon reviews to share, and a bit of news that I know you’ll all love.
Stay tuned and have a great weekend everyone!
