Rear View Mirror 9/3/12
Welcome to Rear View Mirror, ForzaMotorsport.net’s look back on the weekend in racing and what’s going on in the world of Forza. This week saw a full deck of racing and there is so much going on in the world of Forza I had to tell myself to stop looking for cool stuff to cover.
So here is what happened over the weekend in real world racing:
ALMS: Baltimore Sports Car Challenge presented by SRT
When a city is turned into a race course, strange things can happen amidst the tight turns, high speed straightaways, and abrupt chicanes. It started with a turn one, lap one pile up that shook up the grid and immediately bogged down the racing action with a full-course yellow. Many more cautions followed.
In P1, Muscle Milk was hampered by gear actuator problems that took them out of contention and ended with the championship leading car hitting a wall in the last few laps. Dyson Racing’s Eric Lux came back from losing 25 spots in the opening lap melee to get the team’s first P1 win.
The battle in GT was outstanding, where the Falken Tires’ #17 Porsche, driven by Brian Sellers and Wolf Henzler, took the win. The #4 Corvette gave strong chase but was unable to make a move resulting in a pass and hold on to it. Sharp and van Overbeek in the Ferrari lurked in third ever threatening to pass but just did not have an opportunity on the close quartered city course. Muller and Hand in the BMW ended in fourth. Four spots, four manufacturers, something for everyone. Well, almost everyone.
The #91 SRT Viper sponsored by Forza Motorsport had a nasty crash in qualifying that made it unable to compete on Sunday. It’s sister car the #93 Pennzoil sponsored Viper ran well and fought hard against the #02 Ferrari but did not finish either. Such are the trials of bringing a new car and team into the highly competitive GT class mid-season.
The #23 Lotus Evora driven by Townsend Bell is also new to the GT class this year and competes closely with the SRT Vipers. Here is some in-car footage of it qualifying.

IndyCar: Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT
It was a busy weekend in Baltimore and a happy one for Ryan Hunter-Reay who, after a couple disappointing weeks, made his return to the top of the podium. The win gained him 20 points on championship leader Will Power, who finished sixth in the 75-lap race. The championship will be decided in the season finale in Fontana, CA on September 15.
Ryan Briscoe settled for second, and rookie Simon Pagenaud filled out the podium. This marks Pagenaud’s second podium in the last three races. Who do you think will top the IZOD Championship?
Formula 1 Shell Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps
An epic crash at the start of the race initiated by Romain Grosjean resulted in not only absolute carnage but a serious shake-up of the lead for the championship. Championship leader Fernando Alonso was taken out, along with Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and of course, Grosjean. Nobody was hurt physically in the spectacular crash but Grosjean will deservedly be banned from the next race as well as face a 50,000 Euro fine.
McLaren’s Jenson Button lead the race from start to finish. Vettel and Red Bull took second, proving the one-stop strategy proffered by only McLaren and Red Bull delivered a significant advantage. Pre-event favorite Kimi Raikkonen fought hard with Michael Schumacher and earned third despite struggling for grip the entire race.
Watch this footage of the turn one crash, and tell me Alonso isn’t as happy to have his head as he was disappointed to be retired through no fault of his own.
NASCAR: Advocare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway
Race 25 of 36 in the Sprint Cup Series ended up like this: Denny Hamlin won, Jeff Gordon took second, and Brad Keselowski got third. This was Hamlin’s second consecutive victory.
Martin Truex Jr. settled for a fourth place finish after being poised to win. After a late race Jamie McMurray wreck forced a caution, Truex Jr. did not have the traction to regain the race pace and could not hold on to his position.
Drivers just outside the top ten are facing one more race to be seeded in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Kasey Kahne is on top of the wild card standings and nearly guaranteed a spot. Hamlin’s win over Gordon keeps Kyle Busch in the running ahead of Gordon. Next week is going to be win or go home for Gordon.
And in the world of Forza…
VM GP2 Series 3
The GP2 Series 3 features the Mazda MX-5 Superlight. The second round of competition took place at Road America. These cars are very nimble but do not have tremendous top speed, so there was a lot of drafting with low downforce setups.
Taking first place over all rooms and racers was #29 F4H Diablo. For the full race results check out the VM Newsletter
VM Knockout Tournament
This unique tournament featuring a different track and car each week is down to the final two entrants. Last week the final four competed at Suzuka West in BMW M3’s tuned to a maximum PI of 354. Two British drivers have emerged to battle it out at the last event at Bernese Alps Stadplatz in the 2009 Ferrari California with a max PI of 673.
Who will be the Knockout champion of 2012? Will it be #955 FMS Takumi or #440 VVV Amarth?

Cars With the Most Miles
An interesting thread was pointed out to me by SatNiteEduardo. It poses the question: Which car have you put the most miles on in Forza Motorsport 4?
You probably know what your favorite cars are so just hop in one of them and go to “My Profile.” Here you can see the number of miles accrued by that car.
Post your favorite cars and highest miles in this thread started by community member Nelor. If you are going to claim highest miles post a screenshot of the stat from the profile. Unicorns will be awarded to posters with the highest miles and interesting mixes of favorite cars. I will be checking the tread through Friday.
HMA, RVM and WIR Themed Livery Contest
This week we offered a specifically themed community livery contest to promote Rear View Mirror, Heavy Metal Affliction, and the Week in Review. There are a couple pages of entries thus far, and there is still time to submit your design. This week’s themed livery contest will end Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pacific.
So check out the thread and put together a design if you are so inclined. It’s likely that all entries will win something, so let’s see what you can come up with.

Primo Drift Event and September Rivals Modes
Last week in Heavy Metal Affliction we featured Rob Primozich, aka Rob Primo and his S14, 2JZ-powered drift race car. Check out the story here and read this week’s HMA on Thursday for part two.
In addition to a full new batch of Rivals modes with events featuring cars in the September Pennzoil Car Pack, we will be offering a chance to compete against a real drift racing driver in “Primo Drifter.”
We will be giving away unicorns to random participants who participate in the Rivals event. We are also hosting a thread where you can post videos of your best drift runs, cool pics of your drift car liveries, and talk some smack if you think you are worthy. We will be gifting unicorns to fun posts in said thread as well.
So whether you are the king of tire-smoking, perfectly-linked drift magic or a beginner like me, give it a shot. Drift racing is an up and coming motorsport and Rob Primo is a rising star; now is your chance to say you “whooped on him” before he went pro.
If you would like to comment on the content of this week's Rear View Mirror please do so in the RVM thread. Whether you are a new reader or an RVM veteran I like to gift unicorns to folks that post something interesting.
That’s it for today folks!
