Behind the Scenes at the Forza 4 E3 Party
Last night, international press, automotive industry partners, celebrities, Turn 10 staff, Forza community members, and a certain white-helmeted speed demon converged for what was undoubtedly the hottest ticket of E3 2011 week: The Forza Motorsport 4 Party.
Held at the LA Live Event Garage in downtown Los Angeles, the Forza 4 party was the perfect complement to Turn 10’s E3 unveiling of this year’s biggest racing game: Forza Motorsport 4. The food and drink provided by some truly outstanding local food trucks set the stage for a fun-filled night of entertainment, music and, of course, lots of Forza 4. Attendees got a chance to try out the just-announced Top Gear test track for the first time, and get first looks at a handful of Forza 4 cars that could only be found at the event.
In addition to the drivable cars available on the E3 show floor (the Ferrari 599 GTO, the 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator and the 2011Subaru WRX STI), folks were able to drive the Kia cee’d (aka Top Gear’s “reasonably priced car” driven recently by celebrities like Simon Pegg, Tom Cruise, and Cameron Diaz). Dubbed the “Top Gear Challenge,” attendees were invited to run laps on the Top Gear test track in the Kia cee’d while strapped into the Forza 4 hydraulic racing sled. All times were posted on a Top Gear leaderboard, with the quickest drivers of the night receiving special Forza and Top Gear-themed prize packages.
In addition to driving the Top Gear course, attendees also got a chance to try out Forza 4’s all-new Autovista mode with a lineup of astounding cars including the Ferrari California, the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Ferrari Enzo, the Lamborghini Reventon, the Bugatti Veyron, and the McLaren F1. Autovista allowed players to explore and enjoy each of these amazing cars at a level of detail never before seen in a racing game—peeking under the hood, stepping inside the cockpit to fire it up, or listening to Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson give his unique take on each vehicle in this stellar lineup of automotive finery.
While Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear test track are exciting additions to Forza 4, they weren’t the entirety of the Top Gear surprises from the night’s event. Midway through the night, the crowd was honored by the presence of the most famous tame racing driver in the world: the Stig, who dropped in for an on-stage “interview” with the evening’s MC (Speed Channel host and former race driver Tommy Kendall) as well as for a few photo opportunities with fans before being disassembled and shipped back to the UK in a wooden crate.
Though the doors officially opened to the Forza 4 event on Wednesday night, preparation began several days before, with the arrival of some truly incredible cars. Between the ALMS racers, mint-condition American muscle cars, and enough gleaming supercars to make Richard Branson jealous, the automotive lineup at the Forza 4 party was truly a sight to behold. The main tent alone housed a number of cars collectively worth around $5 million.
In addition to serving as some delicious eye-candy, a select number of cars were chosen as nominees for our “E3 2011 Car of Show” award. The collection of nominees turned the upper deck of the LA Live Event Garage into a miniature SEMA showcase, with an array of incredible custom cars. In the end, Turn 10’s creative director Dan Greenwalt chose a matte white, fully customized widebody Bentley from Platinum Motorsport as the E3 2011 Car of Show. Look for this car car to end up in a future DLC pack for Forza 4 after the game’s release on October 11.
Capping off the evening’s festivities was a musical performance by drummer Travis Barker and his partner-in-crime on the turntables, Mix Master Mike. The duo weren’t the only celebrities on hand at the party however. UFC heavyweight fighter and film badass Quinton “Rampage” Jackson brought his customized Dodge Challenger (complete with an insane set of rims with his name adorned on them) to the event, and C.S. Lee, star of the Showtime series “Dexter”, also made an appearance, among many others.
We hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at the Forza 4 E3 2011 party. Stay tuned to FM.net in the coming weeks for lots more Forza news as we lead up to the release of Forza Motorsport 4, beginning on October 11.
